Anchored in folk, Honey Locust blends a multitude of instruments to
create a lush, Southern gothic soundscape. With roots in genres such as
classical, country, indie folk, old time, and Americana, Honey Locust
have built a sound brimming with intricate textures, scattered with
meticulously concise lyrics and cutting with emotional resonance.

Hailing from Nashville, Tennessee, spring finds the five piece
preparing the release of their debut EP Fear Is A Feeling. Recorded at
home with the deliberate intention of making the album as organic as
possible, Fear Is A Feeling is the audible confluence of eight months
of musical growth since the band’s formation in August 2011. The title
track will be released for free download on Bandcamp on April 13th, the
day before the band kicks off their tour in Kentucky.

Densely orchestrated, Honey Locust creates an audible panorama of rich
folk music, with Patrick Howell’s sweeping strings and melodies and the
dynamic voices of multi-instrumentalists Jake Davis and Lizzie Conner.
Though easily described by poetics, the band’s instruments define them
far better than explanations or comparisons. The members of the band
trade off between viola, accordion, cello, guitar, banjo, ukulele,
mandolin, piano, organ, bass, and percussion.

Since the formation of the band in August 2011, Honey Locust has shared
the stage with acts such as New Jersey’s River City Extension,
Michigan’s The Appleseed Collective, and Ohio natives Dolfish and
Saintseneca.

And last but certainly not least, thank you SO MUCH to Collin and Ian for setting up the show at The Spaceship, and to all the friends and strangers who came out and supported us. However, John Cougar Millertime Space Camp, Oshwa, Uncle Ghost—literally everyone was bizarre and unique and impressive in the most unexpected of ways. Had to lug gear up three flights of stairs, but I gotta say it was worth it.

Nashville never looked so pretty as it did after two separate Waffle House stops and 9 hours in the van. My plan for the next few months is to start kickin’ up dust in Nashville with some shows—solo and with Honey Locust—while spending serious time writing new material. Come January or February, I’ll hopefully be starting to record an EP.

Thank you so much to everyone who housed, fed, cared for, and listened to us this past week. Our ability to organize our lives around our art depends on so much generosity from our communities—and we’ve already seen it happening. So keep it going. Burn CD’s for your friends, show them stuff online, drag them out to shows, and it all comes around in the end.

You were amazing. We had one of our best shows yet at The Old Miami with a crowd that included a bunch of locals who came out for Elephantom, Our Mighty Heart, and Macamre Tiger, and a ton of the bar’s veteran regulars. We met a guy from Yugoslavia with the best big white beard you’ve ever seen, and he gave us some pretty serious wisdom for the Honey Locust songs, along with several pints of yogurt and more bread than we know what to do with. Jake’s brother Andrew made sure we had a pretty incredible show. Afterwards we sat around a bonfire singin along to some Neil Young, Tom Waits, and Modest Mouse covers. The night couldn’t have been much better. Once again, the beautiful people in that town showed us a beautiful time.

We just got to Chicago and are still a little overwhelmed by all the skyscrapers and traffic… Show at the Spaceship tonight!!!

What a time. Thank you SO much to all the people who came out to both shows last night, it was truly incredible to see all those faces—familiar and not—smiling and listening out there. I only wish I’d had a bit more time to spend with all the wonderful kids there. So much love coming my way I didn’t even know fully what to do with it.

So really and truly, thank you,Oberlin. I wouldn’t be here, doing what I’m doing, without you.
